Winds of change

In August of 1883, it took mere minutes for a tornado to leave much of Rochester, Minnesota in ruins.

The storm wrought an important page in the history of Mayo Clinic, Rochester and the State of Minnesota. It was also a turning point in the life of Mayo Clinic founders Dr. William Worrall (W.W.) Mayo and his sons. Lessons learned about weathering a storm, working as a team, and taking risks were about to be applied in a new enterprise.

Nearly 150 years later, the State of Minnesota, City of Rochester and Mayo Clinic face the winds of change once again. Today’s health care environment requires Mayo Clinic to think differently about how to achieve its continued success. And, much in the way the tornado of 1883 inspired a partnership between Mayo and the community, the Destination Medical Center project seeks to leverage that partnership once again to secure the future of destination health care in Minnesota.

The DMC has been formed as an unprecedented partnership between the state, local jurisdictions, Mayo Clinic and community organizations focused on a single goal – to maintain Minnesota’s competitive position as a global medical destination. Only by working together will we realize the significant benefits offered by the DMC.
