BIO 2017: Raising awareness of DMC and Discovery Square in San Diego and beyond

There are few better places to connect with the top people in biotechnology than at BIO 2017.

The BIO International Convention (BIO) drew more than 16,000 of the biotech industry’s brightest from a wide spectrum of life science and application areas – including drug discovery, biomanufacturing, genomics, biofuels, nanotechnology, and cell therapy – for a week of intensive networking to discover new opportunities and identify promising partnerships.

Be a part of the Heart of the City at the Community Workshop_02

There are six unique sub-districts being developed as part of the DMC initiative, including the much-anticipated Heart of the City.

Flanked by Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota-Rochester, this sub-district will serve as the true heart and soul of the city: a thriving, walkable oasis that pairs inviting, open spaces with health, retail, hospitality, and leisure.

On Tuesday, June 27, you can be a part of the future of this critical sub-district.

Introducing: The DMC Rochester, MN Storyteller Videos

Rochester is its own special place. It spawned the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, home to those leading the way in life science discoveries and health care innovations. It’s the place people go to get better. Where developers are building an epicenter fueled by economic boom and dramatic growth. Where entrepreneur comes to find their place and discover the next big thing. Destination Medical Center puts Rochester in the middle of it all.

Transportation planning key to strategic growth

Smart growth means anticipating what lies ahead, and that’s exactly what local leaders did at the recent DMC Transportation Work Session.

Members of the DMC Corporation Board of Directors, the DMC Economic Development Agency (EDA) Board of Directors, the Rochester City Council, and the Olmsted County Board of Commissioners came together with nearly 40 community members for a highly-engaged exchange of information about the future of transportation for Rochester.

Transportation: By land or by air

Transportation is at the forefront of urban planning and growth, and Rochester leaders are exploring how to best meet the needs of all as the Destination Medical Center initiative continues to take shape.

Transportation goals for Rochester include moving 23-30% of the workforce downtown via transit by 2035, connecting downtown districts with a circulator, and creating a world-class place for regional transit arrival and departure.

By air

The first United Airlines flight into RST

Rochester International Airport recently welcomed its first-ever United Airlines flight bringing the city another step closer to creating the high quality of service necessary to support the growth expected as a result of DMC.

40 Below: Building the workforce of the future

When you utter the words “40 below” in Minnesota, minds tend to stray toward cold winter nights and non-functional cars. But, as development and progress in and around the DMC District increase, Rochester’s newest young professionals group is changing that perception.

Building the next generation of leaders

While workforce needs for the community are growing across all industries, development related to DMC is driving an even greater demand for talent in the building industry.

Enter 40 Below, an initiative of the Rochester Area Builders (RAB) committed to developing strong, lasting relationships for up-and-comers in the regional building community.

Discovery Square: Science on Display

The DMC vision is progressing as each of the sub-district’s distinctive personalities is beginning to evolve. Heart of the City, for example, serves as the place where health care intersects with hospitality and retail, the Downtown Waterfront looks to transform the perception of Rochester from a medical campus into a vibrant destination, and St. Marys Place becomes a monumental gateway at one of the primary entry points into Rochester.

Lately, though, it’s Discovery Square that’s making the news.
