Reflecting on 10 Years, Looking Ahead Together: 2025 DMC Annual Meeting Recap

Destination Medical Center’s Annual Meeting brought together community members, civic leaders, and partners to mark the midpoint of the 20-year DMC initiative. This milestone gathering reflected on a decade of progress while introducing a bold path forward with new strategies to guide DMC into its next chapter.

Looking Back: A Decade of Shared Progress

From revitalized public spaces and new housing to a thriving innovation ecosystem anchored by Mayo Clinic, Rochester has seen tremendous growth during the first 10 years of DMC. These efforts have delivered new opportunities for businesses, residents, and visitors while strengthening Rochester’s role as a global destination for health and innovation.

Only in Rochester

Rochester is unlike anywhere else in the world. Home to the #1 hospital in the world, Mayo Clinic, we are surrounded by a thriving ecosystem of innovation and care: more than 300 startup companies born from Mayo innovation, $1.1 billion in annual research funding, and over 3,500 patents developed by 8,000 physicians and residents who serve 1.3 million patients from 137 countries each year.

But Rochester’s distinction goes beyond health care. This community is also home to the largest economic development initiative in Minnesota’s history, ensuring modern, 21st-century infrastructure to support growth. We have an education system committed to developing the next generation of health leaders, along with the infrastructure to host three million visitors annually through our hotels, restaurants, conference facilities, and international airport.

Perhaps most importantly, Rochester is powered by elected and civic leaders aligned around a shared vision: to ensure this city can become the very best version of itself. With so much already in place, the question isn’t if Rochester can lead—it’s how.

Looking Ahead: America’s City for Health

At this gathering we introduced a powerful idea, America’s City for Health, not as a tagline but as a uniquely Rochester competitive strategy, organized around three driving forces.

  • Health Innovation as an Economic Engine – fueling ideas, businesses, and careers that improve lives and strengthen our economy.
  • Health Excellence as an Attractor – leveraging Rochester’s unique position as home to Mayo Clinic to attract and retain visitors, talent, students, and residents.
  • Health in the Built Environment – investing in infrastructure and public spaces that center well-being and create safe, healthy, sustainable places for all.

These strategies are at once aspirational and actionable, shaping  investments, policies, and community priorities for years to come.

A Community Conversation

The evening also featured a lively conversation with community leaders, DMC EDA Board Chair Dr. Clark Otley, DMC EDA Board Member Traci Downs, and University of Minnesota Rochester Chancellor Lori Carrell, who reflected on Rochester’s unique strengths and future opportunities. Together, they underscored the importance of continuing to work collaboratively to ensure DMC’s impact is widely shared and deeply felt.

DMCC Approves $85.6 Million Capital Improvement Program, Advances Key Projects at September Meeting

The Destination Medical Center Corporation (DMCC) Board of Directors today approved a $85.6 million 2026-27 Capital Improvement Program and advanced several key initiatives that will continue to shape Rochester’s growth as America’s City for Health. Included in that number is $38.4 million dedicated to infrastructure, experience, and capacity building, occurring alongside Mayo Clinic’s Bold. Forward. Unbound. in Rochester initiative.

“I appreciate the intentionality around strategic access to the Mayo Campus and the downtown area with the clear intention that will also result in an enhanced visitor and resident experience,” said DMCC Chair Wheelock. “This is an example of how unique this partnership is. This is a big, big investment – changing the face of the neighborhoods, and improving the antiquated infrastructure in the area. This is a milestone proposal.”

These improvements – shaped by extensive engagement with residents, business owners, and community partners – ensure that the streets, sidewalks, and shared spaces are vibrant, healthy, and welcoming for all.

“I believe the improvement to Kutzky Park and Downtown Area is a vital investment in the future of our neighborhood, fostering a more inclusive, healthy, and engaged community,” wrote Kutzky resident Shelly Rohe in a letter of support to the DMCC board.

Also included in the approved CIP was continued support for Link Bus Rapid Transit, the 6th Street Bridge, Roadway, Safety and Riverfront Improvements project, as well as interim wayfinding for the frequently evolving mobility commuting circumstances for employees, residents, patients, and visitors.

The DMCC board also continued support for the Downtown Historic District. Funding was approved for two projects located at 317 & 319 Broadway Avenue South. The funding will help with façade improvements and mechanical upgrades, helping preserve and revitalize Rochester’s historic building stock.

Furthermore, the DMCC board approved the DMC Economic Development Agency’s (EDA) 2026 and 2027 workplan and budget. Strategic direction from the board and DMC goals, guiding principles, and priorities helped shape the request. It will next be presented in October to the Rochester City Council for approval.

The next DMCC Board meeting is set for Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at 9:30. a.m.
