Description

Sustainability presentation and discussion about the Rochester Community Initiative (RCI) led by four Mayo High School students and recent graduates: Yezi Gugsa, Kesarin Mehta, Rachel Zhang and Yasmin Ali.

RCI is a youth-led organization focused on improving the community through amplifying youth voice, intersectional advocacy, community education and serving underprivileged demographics. RCI’s work is focused on making the community a more just and equitable place for all residents through engaging events and programs, fundraisers and other charitable activities.

This past summer, RCI organized several peaceful protests in the community in response to the George Floyd homicide in Minneapolis along with a public forum for local candidates. Gugsa, Mehta, Zhang and Ali will share more about their work, past programming and its success, future plans and ways for the community to engage.

DMC and the City of Rochester use a triple bottom line definition for sustainability, including the balance of the environment, social equity and financial returns in its decision-making. RCI is an example of a local organization focused on advancing issues of social equity and advancing the community toward its sustainability goals.
