Description

This month the Equity Series will have two topics.
1. An overview of the City of Rochester’s and Destination Medical Center’s adopted targeted business and workforce participation goals for 2024 on all City- and DMC-funded projects. This will include background on the development and adoption of the goals, highlighting how they impact disadvantaged communities in Rochester, and share examples of previously funded projects successfully meeting the goals. This portion of the presentation will wrap up with an outlook on future opportunities to inspire growth not only in public infrastructure projects, but through private development as well.

2. An overview of the Equity in the Built Environment program – the history, where we are, and what is on the horizon. This will include actionable strategies for organizations to implement today to be on the cutting edge of commerce in the future.

OUR PRESENTERS
Lauren Jensen
Sustainability Coordinator, City of Rochester

Lauren Jensen, LEED Green Associate, is the Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Rochester. Her main focus is to ensure the City and broader Rochester community reach its adopted greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals of 50% reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. She works with all departments to incorporate sustainability in master plans, capital improvement projects, budgets, policies, and programs. In addition to her work with city departments, she supports and collaborates with community organizations, nonprofits, and businesses. Lauren implements her work through the triple bottom line of sustainability – advancing environment, economy, and social equity in tandem across City government and community programs, seeking to build community capacity, empowerment, and cities that are truly sustainable for all.

Julie Brock
Program Manager, Equity in the Built Environment Program

Julie Brock is the project manager for the Equity in the Built Environment program, a joint effort between the City of Rochester and Workforce Development Incorporated. Her experience in K-12 education, workforce development, community-based organizations, business, and higher education uniquely positions Julie to make connections across sectors ensuring equitable access and retention within built environment industries for people who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) women.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from University of Oregon, a secondary teaching certification from Metropolitan State College of Denver, and a Master of Arts degree in Human Development from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.
