When Nate Nordstrom moved to Rochester five years ago, he heard about most of the events going on around town through Facebook or word of mouth. “I found several calendar listings online, but they seemed disconnected,” he recalls.
Nordstrom, founder of BrandHoot, a local agency specializing in custom web, mobile, and branding solutions, decided to take matters into his own hands – literally. “I wanted one place to go for information, and I wanted it in my pocket on my phone.” So Nordstrom developed Rochester Now, a free mobile phone app which attempts to answer the question: “What is going on right now in our community?”
Rochester Now pulls together multiple event calendars, coupons, local social media, city and visitor information, live streaming radio, and more. Though Nordstrom says the app isn’t perfect, he feels it’s a great step forward at a more connected and informed community. “The thousands of users who engage with us each week are a testament to the value we’re providing.”
Like DMC, Nordstrom says Rochester Now is working toward building a stronger and more connected community. “By keeping residents and visitors informed about what’s happening in the community,” said Nordstrom, “we hope to contribute to the growth in this flourishing community.”
