DMCC establishes executive committee to ensure continued progress

Initiatives with the magnitude and impact of Destination Medical Center sometimes require board-level decisions to be made between official board of directors’ meetings. In instances like these, an executive committee is often charged with fulfilling limited board responsibilities to help maintain an organization’s momentum relative to time-sensitive issues and ensure projects continue to move forward as scheduled.

In January 2017, the Destination Medical Center Corporation (DMCC) Board of Directors approved a Resolution establishing an executive committee to do just that. As outlined by the Resolution, the committee may act only during intervals between board of directors’ meetings and is subject to the authority and direction of the full board.

Dare to DREAM: Giving life to Heart of the City

From Discover to Dream, the Destination Medical Center’s Heart of the City public space design team is taking their direction from you.

On March 9, the design team invited community members to take part in the second phase of the design process at a Community Workshop at the Rochester Art Center. More than 130 people attended the 2 ½ hour interactive event.

“The turnout was great,” says Adam Ferrari, owner of the Rochester-based architecture and design firm 9.SQUARE and a member of the design team. But what struck Ferrari was the engagement by the group. “With events like this, it usually goes one of two ways,” he says. “People either react negatively – or they roll up their sleeves and get to work.” This group, according to Ferrari, did the latter.

Heart of the City: Discover. Dream. Design. Do!

RSP Architects, the Minneapolis-based firm charged with championing public realm design for DMC’s Heart of the City sub-district, received accolades from the DMC Corporation board of directors on February 8 when they presented findings from the first of four phases of the design process. The RSP-led design team includes Coen+Partners, 9.Square, HR&A Advisors, and Kimley-Horn.

The Discover Report was the result of 17 days of interviews, surveys, and pop-ups conducted by the Heart of the City public space design team and the culmination of their first phase of design work. During this process, the design team met with hundreds of people – visitors, patients, and community members alike – recognizing that they must understand the community well because “solutions for Heart of the City need to be authentic to Rochester.”

Life science expert coming to Mayo Clinic Accelerator

With the Mortenson project slated to break ground in the fall of 2017, there is a lot of exciting activity on the horizon for Discovery Square.

This DMC sub-district will be a highly-connected, urban life science hub where people will have the opportunity to work together closely to share and discuss ideas, build and test new products, and bring companies to scale with access to Mayo Clinic and other strategic stakeholders.

Susan Windham-Bannister is a life science industry expert and serves as president and CEO of Biomedical Growth Strategies, where she advises industry, academia, and life science clusters.

This Wednesday, Susan will join the startup community in Rochester to share her experiences from Boston and describe how the state of Massachusetts supported its entrepreneurs as their life science industry grew.

One cup at a time: Local entrepreneurs connect

With entrepreneurship brewing in Rochester these days, there is a growing need for more opportunities for these like-minded individuals to connect and network, share successes and struggles, and simply bond. Perhaps over a cup of joe.

1 Million Cups is a national program that incubated out of the Kauffman Foundation where entrepreneurs can come together over coffee to hear pitches from other startups and learn from one another. The free program exists in more than 100 cities nationwide and, today, Rochester became one of those cities.

The future of transportation: A public conversation

Efficient downtown transportation is essential to the success of the DMC Development Plan, and local residents are being asked to help drive the future of this important component.

Integrated Transit Studies being conducted

The city of Rochester is conducting four integrated transit studies to support and advance DMC’s plan. On January 24, study consultants will host the first of four public conversations to share their findings and listen to the thoughts of attendees on transportation in downtown.

Richard Freese is the director of the city’s Public Works Department and feels that Rochester is a unique city requiring a unique approach to travel demand management. “Since the invention of the automobile, cities around the world have tried unsuccessfully to build their way out of traffic congestion by building more or wider roads,” Freese says.

DMC’s mission to attract people, investment opportunities, and jobs to Rochester is reflected in the entrepreneurial spirit of our community. Several of those entrepreneurs were honored at the third annual RAVE (Recognizing, Awarding, and Valuing Entrepreneurs) celebration in November.

Celebrating entrepreneurs and inspiring innovation

There isn’t a blueprint for becoming an entrepreneur. There also isn’t a universally agreed-upon definition. In the simplest sense, an entrepreneur is an individual who identifies a need or a problem and finds a way to fill it or a solution to fix it. An entrepreneur can be an inventor, an artist, or an organizer. In the end, it’s not so much the definition but the impact of entrepreneurship that matters. That impact is so powerful that, every November, 165 countries around the world dedicate an entire week to celebrating it.

gew GEW Rochester kicks off on Monday, November 14 and runs through Friday, November 18. Events throughout the week provide opportunities to learn from those involved in new and existing startups, to support the evolving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Rochester, and to connect with kindred spirits.

Progress continues in the St Marys Place sub-district

A few months ago, DMC developed the design process for the public realm/public infrastructure for the St. Marys Place sub-district and 2nd Street Corridor. With the data collection phase complete, we recently initiated the next step in the process: the Design Sprint.

St-Marys-Place This process called for teams of stakeholders – property owners, neighborhood leaders, Mayo Clinic representatives, and city staff – to work with a team of designers to develop concepts that address issues such as pedestrian circulation (think streetscape, skyways, and tunnels), parking, and neighborhood connections.
