M.A. Mortenson Co. has been chosen as the developer for the research campus of Mayo Clinic’s Destination Medical Center (DMC) in downtown Rochester.
The six-block subdistrict which will be called Discovery Square is supposed to “serve as a point where physicians and scientists will come together with businesses and entrepreneurs to accelerate advancements in medical research and technology for critical advances in patient care,” according to an announcement.

Mayo Clinic selects developer for Discovery Square
The DMC vision moved another step closer to becoming a reality today when Mayo Clinic announced today that it will collaborate with M.A. Mortenson, a Minneapolis-based real estate development and construction firm, on the DMC sub-district Discovery Square.
Over the next 20 years, Mayo Clinic will add 2 million square feet of space in Discovery Square for research, education, and product development.
“With [Mortenson’s] experience, they will be a fantastic partner with Mayo to spearhead the development of the six-block Discovery Square, the bioscience research, education and medical innovation campus that is the core of the DMC,” says Lt. Governor Tina Smith, DMC Corporation Board Chair. “Discovery Square, which will include Mayo and other private businesses, is a key milestone for DMC.”
Destination Medical Center Corporation Board Takes Major Step Forward on Heart of the City
ROCHESTER, Minn. (August 25, 2016) – At today’s board meeting, the Destination Medical Center (DMC) Corporation Board of Directors took a major step forward on DMC’s Heart of the City sub-district by approving the recommendation of the Heart of the City Community Advisory Committee to select RSP Architects as the design team for public space in Heart of the City. The DMC Corporation Board also was updated on the latest progress of the Discovery Square sub-district and transportation.
“The Heart of the City district is an essential part of our strategy to ensure Rochester’s place as America’s City for Health,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith, DMC Corporation Board Chair. “It will be the place where Mayo Clinic, medical innovation, new business and hospitality opportunities, and housing choices all meet. Today’s announcement takes us a step closer to this goal.”
Following the meeting, the DMC Corporation Board toured the recently reopened Conley-Maass Building located in Discovery Square and met with the building’s tenants and collaborators.
Collider Core: A hub for local entrepreneurs
Located downtown in Rochester’s historic Conley-Maass Building, Collider Core recently opened its doors for business.
The co-working hub can be found in DMC’s Discovery Square sub-district and is designed to provide both fledgling and established entrepreneurs with a unique environment where they can work, connect, and learn.
Collider founder Jamie Sundsbak explains the difference between Collider and Collider Core. “Collider is the entrepreneurial ecosystem – think BioAM, but for all entrepreneurship in the Rochester area,” he explains. “Core is the physical hub – a hybrid of a traditional coworking and business incubator space.” In short, Core provides the Collider community with its operating space.

A hub for local entrepreneurs opened its doors Monday in Downtown Rochester. “Collider Core” gives novice and seasoned entrepreneurs a place to work and connect with each other. There are conference rooms, dedicated workspaces and help finding community resources to launch their business.
“I think its super important that what’s happening with DMC we have these sort of hubs to engage the entrepreneurial community in fact that’s why we called it Collider, we wanted these sort of random collisions to happen with people to get them successful,” Community Manager Jamie Sundsbak explains.
The business incubator is already looking to the future and aims to fill space in the DMC’s Discovery Square going forward.

If you want to know just how far Rochester’s entrepreneurial community has come in a few short years, ask Jamie Sundsbak.
As a Senior Program Coordinator at the Mayo Clinic and the founder of BioAM, a meet-up group for bio-business startups in southern Minnesota, Sundsbak says Rochester has “come a long way.”
“I know that many people don’t see that, but for those of us in the trenches, it has been a monumental shift,” Sundsbak told Destination Medical Center in a recent interview. “I have worked with fantastic people from all over the city who share a fantastic entrepreneurial vision and who have worked tirelessly to expand our ecosystem.”
Post-Bulletin: Mayo casts wide net with Discovery Square plan
Mayo Clinic recently leveraged an international bio science conference in California to announce the Discovery Square development that will double its research footprint in downtown Rochester.
That venue was selected over a hometown press conference in hopes of making a splash with the media horde and the 14,000 attendees, which included 75 heavy hitters from the bio science industry who got exclusive invitations to attend Mayo Clinic’s special event on June 7.
It’s too early to determine whether that very public effort will pay off by attracting sought-after national and international health care businesses, researchers and inventors, but the unveiling of the first tangible step of the ambitious $6 billion Destination Medical Center project has already drawn effusive praise.

Discovery Square and updates on the Destination Medical Center design guidelines were among the highlights in this week’s Destination Medical Center Corporation board meeting.
Earlier this month, Mayo Clinic and DMC made a major announcement about the next steps for Discovery Square, an urban research center where doctors, researchers, and scientists can work together on advancements in medical research, technology, and patient care.
“Mayo Clinic’s investment in Discovery Square is an exciting step for the city of Rochester. Discovery Square will propel the development of innovative ideas, products, and businesses in southeast Minnesota,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith, DMC Corporation Board Chair.
The first building will break ground in 2017, and Mayo Clinic is currently searching for a real estate development firm to take on the project.
