The Historic Chateau: Imagining the future and celebrating the past

Screen Shot 2016-05-28 at 7.09.55 AM With Green River Soda and popcorn in hand, Rochester community members got their first look at the Chateau Theatre’s future last week.

The building, which was purchased by the City of Rochester last year, will be transformed into a multi-use performing arts space. Exactly what the building’s interior will look like is still in the planning stages.

But architects from Miller Dunwiddie Architecture, the Minneapolis firm selected by the Chateau Theatre Taskforce to reimagine the building, said that the Chateau will continue to be a focal point of downtown Rochester and the Heart of the City.

In twenty minutes, those are the three words more than 100 Rochester community members settled on to describe what they believe makes a healthy city.

The rapid-fire brainstorming event was part of a Community Conversation About Prototyping, a public event hosted by Destination Medical Center, Rochester Downtown Alliance, and the Rochester Art Center. It featured Our City co-founders and prototyping festival organizers Ray Boyle and Jake Levitas.

Prototyping 101: Everything you need to know for Rochester’s Community Conversation About Prototyping

Legendary urban design writer and thinker Jane Jacobs once wrote that “cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”

With those words in mind, the Destination Medical Center, the Rochester Downtown Alliance and the Rochester Art Center are hosting a Community Conversation About Prototyping tomorrow evening at the Rochester Art Center. The event is free and open to the public, and it is meant to educate community members on experiences from prototyping festivals in California that were organized as a way to reimagine urban spaces in San Francisco and Oakland. Ultimately, we’re hoping the forum will spark some creative ideas about how Rochester’s urban landscape can promote health and well-being prior to our own prototyping festival in September. The event will feature Our City co-founders and prototyping festival organizers Jake Levitas and Ray Boyle.

DMC joins Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce and SE Minnesota leaders in St. Paul

More than 200 people from 10 southeast Minnesota chambers of commerce made the trek to St. Paul to engage with state legislators.

This was the first time the region has joined together for this event, and Lisa Clarke, DMC EDA executive director, recognized the importance and appreciation of this type of synergy.

“Having us together to represent our region as a whole is a testimony to how we are working together to make an impact for the state of Minnesota,” she says.

Medical Alley: Destination Medical Center: The Why, The How

The Destination Medical Center (DMC) investment in the Rochester community is more $6B; most of that privately funded. It is a 20-year initiative that will redesign the city creating a spillover benefit to the state of Minnesota as a whole. Rochester is home to the famed Mayo Clinic and a growing startup health technology community. The DMC will accelerate and complement what is already happening in Rochester, and will help Minnesota retain its place as the great state of everything healthcare.

The project is much more than a city planning and economic development effort as attendees at the first Board of Directors Senior Executive Briefing learned on February 17^th at our Medical Alley Association (MAA) headquarters. Lisa Clarke, Executive Director of the DMC and Patrick Seeb, the head of economic development, delivered a briefing to approximately 40 guests of the MAA board, laying out the details of the enormous DMC effort, providing the why and the how.

PB Dialogues: The future of the arts for Rochester

February’s Post-Bulletin (PB) Dialogue, moderated by PB editor Jay Furst, will gather several community arts leaders and advocates together to discuss the future of arts in downtown Rochester during an informal, 90-minute conversation at the Rochester Public Library.
