Maintaining a diverse workforce as DMC evolves

Rochester is growing – and that means there’s no shortage of work to go around.

DMC, the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce, Mayo Clinic, the Diversity Council, the City of SupplierDiversity_markRochester, and others want to make sure businesses owned by minorities, women, and veterans have access to that work.

That’s why the Chamber will be hosting a Supplier Diversity Summit & Business Expo on August 3rd at the Mayo Civic Center to connect small and diverse firms with companies and organizations with contract opportunities.

DMC Design Guidelines

With Mayo Clinic defining its landscape, Rochester has always been a place where health is front-and-center.

Guidelines developed by the University of Minnesota Design Center that are meant to help DMC and the City of Rochester meet those goals will be open for public comment Thursday.

“We want Rochester to be a place where local infrastructure encourages a healthy lifestyle,” said DMC Executive Director Lisa Clarke. “That may mean designing neighborhoods streets that promote walking over driving, for instance.

Mayo Clinic has officially launched its plan for Destination Medical Center’s Discovery Square, an urban bioscience campus in Rochester where doctors, researchers, and scientists will come together to accelerate new advancements in medical research, technology, and patient care.

Mayo Clinic’s announcement that it is on the hunt for a strategic real estate development firm to build out Discovery Square is a major milestone for the Destination Medical Center’s (DMC) plan to enhance Rochester’s reputation as the world’s premier destination for health and wellness, and to create a robust entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem that encourages start-up companies.

Mayo Clinic’s recently awarded grant complements Discovery Square

The Mayo Clinic has been awarded $142 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health to create a research repository of biologic samples to advance precision medicine.

The grant complements the Destination Medical Center’s efforts to position Rochester – and specifically Discovery Square – as an international hub for medical innovation.

Discovery Square is the economic engine for DMC. It represents the future of biomedicine, research, and technology innovation and is anticipated to be one of the largest drivers of job growth in Rochester,” says Lisa Clarke, executive director of the DMC Economic Development Agency.

Board member and former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak called the proposal “a home run,” saying it meets a lot of the DMC’s goals for housing, retail, and community spaces.

StarTribune: Med-tech partnership promotes Minnesota as a place to do business

Rochester’s med-tech business community is getting a national boost.

Earlier this week, Greater MSP – an economic development agency in the Twin Cities – announced the Minnesota Medical Manufacturing Partnership, giving medical manufacturers working in Rochester and in Minnesota access to federal agencies that coordinate $1 billion in economic development assistance.

Rochester is in one of 24 regions selected by the federal government as part of a nationwide effort to reignite manufacturing.

Destination Medical Center Executive Director Lisa Clarke said the partnership will help transform Rochester’s med-tech community in the Discovery Square Subdistrict and our region.

DMCC board welcomes two new members

In 2015, the Destination Medical Center Corporation board expressed the need for 2016 efforts to focus on three key areas – momentum, metrics, and marketing. Updates provided at the April 18 board meeting clearly indicated all those invested in bringing the DMC vision to life were listening.

This was the first time the region has joined together for this event, and Lisa Clarke, DMC EDA executive director, recognized the importance and appreciation of this type of synergy.

“Having us together to represent our region as a whole is a testimony to how we are working together to make an impact for the state of Minnesota,” she says.

Medical Alley: Destination Medical Center: The Why, The How

The Destination Medical Center (DMC) investment in the Rochester community is more $6B; most of that privately funded. It is a 20-year initiative that will redesign the city creating a spillover benefit to the state of Minnesota as a whole. Rochester is home to the famed Mayo Clinic and a growing startup health technology community. The DMC will accelerate and complement what is already happening in Rochester, and will help Minnesota retain its place as the great state of everything healthcare.

The project is much more than a city planning and economic development effort as attendees at the first Board of Directors Senior Executive Briefing learned on February 17th at our Medical Alley Association (MAA) headquarters. Lisa Clarke, Executive Director of the DMC and Patrick Seeb, the head of economic development, delivered a briefing to approximately 40 guests of the MAA board, laying out the details of the enormous DMC effort, providing the why and the how.
