Life science expert coming to Mayo Clinic Accelerator

With the Mortenson project slated to break ground in the fall of 2017, there is a lot of exciting activity on the horizon for Discovery Square.

This DMC sub-district will be a highly-connected, urban life science hub where people will have the opportunity to work together closely to share and discuss ideas, build and test new products, and bring companies to scale with access to Mayo Clinic and other strategic stakeholders.

This Wednesday, Susan will join the startup community in Rochester to share her experiences from Boston and describe how the state of Massachusetts supported its entrepreneurs as their life science industry grew.

SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company headquartered in New York City, recently published a list citing Rochester as the #1 “best place for working women.” After deducting costs for housing, women in Rochester are left with higher median incomes than in any other metro area.

Dr. Jeanne M. Huddleston is Mayo Clinic’s first Hospitalist, a physician whose professional focus is on the general medical care of hospitalized patients. She expanded upon that role by becoming accredited in industrial and systems engineering, statistics, and LEAN Six Sigma, among other fields of study. Huddleston: I moved over from the Center for Science of Health Care Delivery to the Center for Innovation (CFI) because I’m very passionate about making meaningful improvements in health care delivery for our patients and our providers now. Not five years from now. Not ten years from now – but now.

Star Tribune: Mortenson picked for Destination Medical Center’s Discovery Square

M.A. Mortenson Co. has been chosen as the developer for the research campus of Mayo Clinic’s Destination Medical Center (DMC) in downtown Rochester.

The six-block subdistrict which will be called Discovery Square is supposed to “serve as a point where physicians and scientists will come together with businesses and entrepreneurs to accelerate advancements in medical research and technology for critical advances in patient care,” according to an announcement.

Mayo Clinic selects developer for Discovery Square

MortLogo_400x400The DMC vision moved another step closer to becoming a reality today when Mayo Clinic announced today that it will collaborate with M.A. Mortenson, a Minneapolis-based real estate development and construction firm, on the DMC sub-district Discovery Square.

Over the next 20 years, Mayo Clinic will add 2 million square feet of space in Discovery Square for research, education, and product development.

“With [Mortenson’s] experience, they will be a fantastic partner with Mayo to spearhead the development of the six-block Discovery Square, the bioscience research, education and medical innovation campus that is the core of the DMC,” says Lt. Governor Tina Smith, DMC Corporation Board Chair. “Discovery Square, which will include Mayo and other private businesses, is a key milestone for DMC.”

Perception is reality: Enhancing the visitor experience

Rochester residents and visitors are now able to provide feedback on their local hospitality experiences in a one-minute online survey.

It’s part of an overall effort to help make Rochester competitive in the worldwide healthcare market and position Rochester as a medical destination.

Getting feedback from visitors and community members on their experience with the program is important, says CVB Executive Director Brad Jones.

Strong start-ups and emerging ecosystems: Q&A with Jamie Sundsbak

As a Senior Program Coordinator at the Mayo Clinic and the founder of BioAM, a meet-up group for bio-business startups in southern Minnesota, Sundsbak says Rochester has “come a long way.”
